A Few Thoughts on Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange [review]

17 Jul

Our designer/visionary/main man Jarren Simmons (@XTRA__) wrote a splendid review on Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange over on his blog recently, and I wanted to share it over here. Enjoy…

In a world seemingly dominated by the zap of electronic music, Frank Ocean’sChannel Orange is a breath of fresh air for the over-synthesized ear. I usually don’t believe in tethering albums to one genre, but Channel Orange is more of a funk/soul album than anything. If it’s an R&B album it’s more akin to a Motown release than a modern one, with jazzy flourishes and roaming syncopation from beginning to end. Continue reading

THREAD THE NEEDLE: Happy VANSvember!

18 Nov

You’re probably asking yourself, why isn’t that on my calender?

Well the answer is that this is a celebration my boss, @justinhustle, decided to start this year for every November from now on.  If you haven’t heard, one of the co-founders of Vans, James Van Doren, passed away from cancer earlier this month.  By age 72, Van Doren has created a legacy embedded in America’s culture by presenting a quality brand of shoes and clothing.  In his honor, those committed to VANSvember have decided to only wear Vans shoes throughout the month of November.  The Vans shoe has always been known as a standard for me.  I was never a great skateboarder but I tried and I respected its culture.  Since then, Vans have grown much further than its roots in skateboarding as a large spectrum of people now sport the brand.  Hit the jump and join as I pay pseudo-homage to a hero by picking out my Vans preferences.

THREAD THE NEEDLE: Top Buys For Average Guys

1 Nov

I recently came to asking myself this question: “What if I run out of ideas for Thread The Needle?” I can only be so genius for so long. I decided that at the end of every month, I’m going to have a sub-series within my TTN series. It’s going to be a “Top Buys for Average Guys” post consisting of either top products I’ve required or top products I already own that I liked wearing that corresponding month. My main goal is to give you all insight on a style blogger’s wardrobe; this by no means is an attempt to brag about what I buy. I am an average guy with some average money. Everyone has his or her own style, I’m just here to help shape it. Hit the jump to read about this month’s top buys. Continue reading

ON THE FRITZ: The NBA Players Association Doesn’t Get It

26 Oct

First and foremost, I wanna apologize to the 4 people who like reading my On The Fritz posts for not posting the last 2 weeks. I know that might be an exaggeration but thanks for the continued support Mom, without it I wouldn’t be here writing an ignorant blog post about the inevitable NBA Lockout. The fact that the NBA Players Association is still (still) fighting for money is no longer annoying, it’s down right stupid. I used to respect Derek Fisher, I really did, and as much as I love the thought of Delonte West working at Home Depot, I can’t just stand idly by while this lockout becomes a reality. I MUST ADDRESS THIS ISSUE TO THE 4 (2?) OF YOU!

Hit the jump.

THREAD THE NEEDLE: Fall For Females

20 Oct

My apologies about the absence of last week’s TTN but my life has been filled with tedious work that a senior in college has to endure. Whatever, I probably shouldn’t complain to my readers. I was motivated to write this week’s TTN after reading last weeks @PropaneLV’s “White Rapper Thoughts” article. I don’t think I’ve posted any type of female fashion on here unless I was referring to guys who accessorize themselves with products meant for women.

Since fall is well underway, at least here in Ohio it is, I want to spend this week’s post speaking on female fall fashion. This is for both the ladies and gents. Read on and gain some knowledge. Continue reading

WHITE RAPPER THOUGHTS: 10 Reasons Why Local Rappers Stay Local

19 Oct

Hi! PropaneLV here again. My favorite girl I don’t have sex with (@veezyfmaybe) didn’t proof read this article, so it may be a little more rappery than usual. That being said, I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time around rappers of all shapes and sizes. From the backpackers that just want to spray paint and play video games to the white boys that wear grills.  I know rappers. I hope this article doesn’t offend anyone, but if it does that probably means you’re a local rapper, whose opinion means nothing to society to begin with. Cheers.

WHITE RAPPER THOUGHTS: My Top 10 Light Skinned Women of All Time

13 Oct

Everybody that knows LV knows I love me some light skinned women.  In fact, I haven’t dated anything but caramel colored queens since I was dumped in front of my locker sophomore year.  Seriously though, I don’t ever watch white on white porn. Coffee colored females (if you add cream) are my addiction.  In fact if you’re a white rapper not dating an exotic looking female, then you probably think hooks don’t matter.  Really, if you can’t comprehend the level of street credibility a light skinned woman is worth then you probably never liked Fresh Prince and maybe even licked your glue stick as a child.  Below I made a list of my (MY!!) all time favorite light skinned b*tches.
