INTERVIEW: Cleveland’s DJ Flaco Flash talks politics, favoritism, & more

29 Mar

International award winning DJ FLACO FLASH fills us in on how he got into DJ ing and how he got his DJ name (very cool by the way).  He also gives us a clearer picture of the favoritism and politics all talented DJ’s have to endure, ecspecially in Cleveland… Check this cat out!

Dirty Laces: How did you get started into music/DJ ing?

Flaco Flash: It goes back to 92′ my pops used to take me to these Latin concerts and between the artist sets there was a guy with headphones on, a mic and playing all different kinds of music. The crowd was motivated heavy by him. I had to be that, so my pops got me started with my first set of tables a couple vinyl’s, mixer and headphones and its been a wrap since.

DL: How did you get the name Flaco Flash?

FF: Lmao I went to a def jam concert back in like 2002 or 2003 and I was kicking it with Capone and Noriega just clowning and Nore is like damn that was fast flaco flash and it just stuck he was calling me that all night and when he hosted the mixtape he kept saying it and it just stuck, i been flaco flash ever since.

DL: Tell us about the international awards and other recognitions you have received?

FF: I have been nominated at the justos mixtape awards (the grammy awards for mixtape djs) 3 times in a row, my last nomination i won, im nominated again this year so yall log on www.thejustos.com and VOTE!!! I also brought home 2010 “Mixologist Dj Of The Year” at The International Dj Award (IDJ awards).

DL: What type of music is the easiest to remix or is the most interesting for you?

FF: In all honesty anything thats hot can be remixed, it all just comes down to if you have time and patience. I spin all genres of music and refuse to limit myself to just one genre (thats just wack).

DL: What’s your involvement in the Cleveland music scene?

FF: I like to think that i am one of the djs in this city that has helped convert the crowd to being more open minded. I do alot there and keep it real diverse, one day ill be hosting a mixtape for a hip hop artist who has a crazy street buzz and that same night you might find me playing house music downtown and then hitting the road to go do a latin set in another city.

DL: Why aren’t you on the radio?

FF: LMFAO can you say FAVORITISM (not sure if i spelled it right lol) man its all politics plus believe it or not alot of heads really hate what I do and how I do it. Most of them know they cant push me around so they dont reach out, and thats cool. I did meet a few people at this past event i just did for Lexus so lets see what happens, but I do have something in the works for satelite radi. so look out people!

DL: What’s your opinion of the Cleveland club scene/music scene?

FF: The club scene in cleveland has really changed and is real heavy right now, real diverse and people are starting to open up a little more (thanks to a few djs who dont stick to the script)! All we need now is for djs to stop under cutting each other on these prices, all honesty the people dont come to the club to sit on your sofa just because its brand new or to look at a wall you just painted. they come to hear good music and party hard. the dj is the one who makes it happen and keeps them there. so come on djs dont sell yourself short and work for free. tell them you want that bread if they want the crowd to stay and spend at their bar. Find yourself stop being lost!

DL: What are some events/projects you have coming up in the future?

FF: well the events keep coming, thats nonstop. as for projects i have an official mixtape album dropping this summer, all original music and different genres. really just alot of good music (i did a bit of production) that no one has heard yet. i  have alot of features on it from local ohio artist to major industry artist we are about 6 tracks in already. i also have an APP for the iphone/ipad which will be available in a few weeks, just going thru the process with Apple. it will also be available for the droids in the summer. the site is getting a complete make over right now but its still up so stop by people www.djflaco.com make sure you follow me on twitter @djflaco and artist if you need your mixtapes hosted hit me up [email protected].
